Planning a disabled bathroom around the person using it
We plan the room around the person who will use it: how they move, whether they use a wheelchair or walking aid, whether a carer helps, and what may change in future. Good accessibility is often about space as much as equipment, so we look at door widths, where the toilet and basin sit, and room to turn. If an occupational therapist has carried out a home assessment and made recommendations, we work from those.
Help with the cost: Disabled Facilities Grants
If you or someone you live with is disabled, a Disabled Facilities Grant may pay for some or all of the work. In England the council must pay up to £30,000 per application, minus any contribution you are assessed to make. It can cover a level-access shower, grab rails and other home adaptations (GOV.UK).
In Doncaster, you start with a financial assessment from the council, which you can request on 01302 737391. Your income and savings decide whether you pay towards the work. If you receive more than £5,000 and move within ten years, you may have to repay up to £10,000 (City of Doncaster Council).
The grant does not affect any benefits you receive. An occupational therapist usually assesses what is needed first.
VAT relief on disabled adaptations
If you're disabled or have a long-term illness, you may not have to pay VAT on some building work done for your own use, such as installing a toilet, along with the work needed to install it. You confirm you're eligible in writing. People who are elderly but not disabled, or only temporarily disabled, don't qualify (GOV.UK).
Accessible bathroom costs in Doncaster

Nationally, a barrier-free, level-access shower is typically £2,500 to £7,000 (MyBuilder) and a full wet room £4,000 to £10,000 (MyBuilder). Mobility bathrooms that don't look clinical
Grab rails, seats and level floors now come in finishes that suit a normal bathroom, such as matt black, brushed brass or white rather than hospital grey. We choose tiles and fittings with you, so the room is safe for the person who needs it and works for everyone else in the home too. Ask any installer, us included, what workmanship guarantee they give in writing: for disabled people relying on a bathroom every day, that peace of mind matters.

Accessible bathrooms: frequently asked questions
Can you work from my occupational therapist’s recommendations?
Yes. Share the report at the design visit and we will plan the layout and fittings around it.
Do I need to wait for a grant before getting a quote?
No. You can get a quote at any time. If you are applying for a Disabled Facilities Grant, the council’s assessment comes first, so ask them about timings.
Can you make a bathroom wheelchair accessible?
Often, yes. We check door widths and turning space at the visit. Sometimes swapping a hinged door for a sliding one or moving a wall makes the difference.
Will it look clinical?
It does not have to. Grab rails, seats and level floors come in finishes that suit a normal bathroom, and we choose tiles and fittings with you.
