Wet room vs walk-in shower: which is right for you?
The difference between a wet room and a walk-in shower, with costs, cleaning, accessibility and which suits a small bathroom.

Quick answer
A walk-in shower sits on a low shower tray with a glass panel inside an ordinary bathroom, while a wet room waterproofs the whole floor and lays it to fall to a drain, with no tray at all. A walk-in shower costs less and is quicker to fit, from £1,500 according to MyBuilder. A wet room gives fully level access and suits small rooms, at £4,650 to £10,912 in Doncaster according to Checkatrade.

What is the difference between a wet room and a walk-in shower?
A walk-in shower is an open shower area, usually with a low shower tray and one fixed glass panel or shower screen, inside a normal bathroom. Unlike a standard shower cubicle or shower enclosure, there is no door. Only the shower area is waterproofed, often with tiles or wall panels.
A wet room has no shower tray. The bathroom floor is made watertight (tanked) and laid to a gentle gradient towards a drain, so the shower is part of the floor and the room is effectively open plan. Most wet rooms still have a glass screen to keep the rest of the bathroom drier.
Walk-in shower vs wet room: shower tray or tray-free floor?
The shower tray is the real difference. A tray contains the water, so the rest of the room can be built like any new bathroom. Without a tray, the floor and walls around the shower must be waterproofed and the whole floor must fall to the drain, which is more work required during the renovation.

Which is cheaper?
A walk-in shower. It needs less waterproofing and less floor work. MyBuilder puts a basic walk-in shower at £1,500 to £3,000 (MyBuilder), while Checkatrade's Doncaster data puts a wet room at £4,650 to £10,912 (Checkatrade). See walk-in shower cost for the full breakdown.
Which is better for a small bathroom?
A wet room often makes a small bathroom feel bigger, because there's no tray or enclosure breaking up the floor. The downside is that more of the room gets wet, so the toilet roll and towels need a dry spot. In a small room, a walk-in shower with a tall glass panel is a good compromise.
Which is more accessible?
A wet room, or a level-access walk-in shower, because there is nothing to step over. That suits wheelchair users, people with limited mobility or mobility issues, anyone planning for old age and anyone who showers seated. Non-slip floor tiles matter in both. Read our guide to wet rooms for elderly and disabled people.
Which is easier to clean?
Both are easy to clean compared with a bath or a framed enclosure. A wet room has no tray edges or seals to clean around, but the floor, drain and glass need regular wiping, and good ventilation keeps mould away. Large tiles and fewer grout lines help either way.
Can a wet room shower leak?
Not if it's built properly. A wet room relies on a continuous waterproof membrane under the tiles and the right fall to the drain. Upstairs, on timber joists, a rigid former keeps the floor stable. Badly laid tanking is where leaks come from, so choose an experienced fitter.
Can I have a toilet in a wet room?
Yes. Place the toilet away from the shower and use a glass screen so the toilet and toilet roll stay dry. A wet room without a screen works best in a larger room.
Which should you choose?
Choose a walk-in shower if you want the lower cost, a quick fit and a standard bathroom layout. Choose a wet room if you want fully level access, a small room to feel bigger or a sleek, modern look. Frequently asked questions
Is a walk-in shower the same as a wet room?
No. A walk-in shower usually has a low tray and only the shower area is waterproofed. A wet room has no tray, and the whole floor is waterproofed and falls to a drain.
Is a wet room more expensive than a walk-in shower?
Yes, usually. Checkatrade’s Doncaster data puts a wet room at £4,650 to £10,912, while MyBuilder puts a basic walk-in shower at £1,500 to £3,000.
Do wet rooms need underfloor heating?
No, but it helps the floor dry quickly and makes the room more comfortable.
Can you have a wet room upstairs?
Yes. On a timber floor, a rigid former is set between the joists and the whole floor is tanked before tiling.
